DICK TARGETS CHAMPIONSHIP WIN

Speedworks Motorsport Team Principal has set his sights on winning the 2007 AVO Ginetta Championship in only his first full season in the category.

Dick, a former MaX5 champion and a race winner in the fearsome Eurocar V6 and V8 championship, excelled on his outings in the category during the 2006 season. As well as winning a race in the prestigious Winter Series, Dick claimed second place and fastest lap by a mammoth 1.2 seconds in the final full championship race of the season.

“Obviously the target is to win the championship,” said Dick. “There are some very good drivers out there to beat so it’s definitely not going to be easy, but we’ve got decent experience of the car and have proved we can run at the sharp end.”

Dick is also hopeful that the winner of the Speedworks Ginetta Scholarship will be among the drivers trying to deprive him of the championship title.

“The last two winners of the scholarship have both run at the front, so hopefully we’ll have another driver capable of doing the same in Ginettas.”

London Motorsport Show

Speedworks Motorsport Team Principal Christian Dick will be on the Speedworks Ginetta Scholarship stand throughout the London Motorsport Show. The 31-year-old has won races in every championship he has raced in and is one of the favourites to win next season’s AVO Ginetta Championship.

Dick will be on hand to answer questions about the scholarship, which he created in 2004 to give a novice racing driver a completely free season of racing worth over £30,000.

To enter the scholarship, you only need to participate in one of Speedworks’ evaluation track days, which offer drivers the chance to learn the basics of racing behind the wheel of genuine Ginetta G20 race cars.

For more information or a chat with the team, head over to stand 16.

VICTORY FOR SPEEDWORKS AT BRANDS HATCH

Speedworks Motorsport claimed its first Ginetta race victory with a dominant triumph in the Winter Challenge two-driver race at Brands Hatch on Saturday.

Paul Sheard started the 40-minute race from pole position after a sensational last-gasp effort by Speedworks Team Principal Christian Dick in qualifying snatched top spot.

Veteran Sheard put in a strong opening stint, running in second place, before pitting to hand over to Dick when the safety car was deployed after 15 minutes.

Dick rejoined third on the road, but within a few laps had passed Nathan Dod for first place into Graham Hill Bend. Thereafter, Dick was able to cruise to a comfortable win by over 20 seconds.

“I didn’t have to push at all,” said Dick. “The pit-stop went well, so I didn’t have too much work to do when I rejoined and it was one of the easier wins I’ve had.”

The result bodes well for the 2007 season, with Dick one of the favourites to win the AVO Ginetta Championship outright in his and Speedworks Motorsport’s first full season in the category.

“We would have won the Ginetta Winter Series title but for some bad luck in the first round at Snetterton,” said Dick. “It’s good to get that first win out of the way and go into next season on a roll.”

DISAPPOINTING RESULT FOR SPEEDWORKS AT SNETTERTON

After what was heading to be a successful weekend, Christian and Paul came home without a result. Christian was driver 1 and pitted for the driver change with a huge lead after second placed driver, Toby Newton spun coming onto the back straight. The driver change went smoothly but when Paul returned to the circuit there had been an incident and the safety car was out on track and the boys advantage gone! Worse luck was to follow after the safety car had pitted, Paul slipped to third place on the opening lap but was still in contention when second placed Paul Rutter spun coming onto the main straight leaving Paul with nowhere to go but into the spinning car, ripping the bonnet off and causing him to retire. Onwards and upwards to Brands now, and the boys are hungry for a win!

TESTING GOES WELL FOR FATHER/SON DUO

Speedworks Motorsport boss Christian Dick and step-father Paul Sheard underlined their status as one of the favourites for the Ginetta Winter Series title by setting a stunning pace in testing today.

The first round of the two-event series will be held at Snetterton, Norfolk, tomorrow. Dick will be looking to go one better than his second place in last month's AVO Ginetta Championship finale at Donington Park, while it will be racing veteran Sheard's first outing in the category.

"It's a challenging and unusual format for us this weekend," said Dick of the 40-minute race. "With a driver change halfway through, it's more of an endurance style race. The biggest worry for us is whether the car will run out of petrol or not. We have a substantially smaller tank than everyone else because the regular championship races are all over shorter distances."

In testing, the pair have beaten the circuit lap record despite neither Dick nor Sheard having driven the circuit in Ginetta G20 before. With another dry day forcast for tomorrow, they have a fantastic chance of a victory which will take them halfway to the Winter Series crown.

The Winter Series concludes at Brands Hatch in Kent on November 11.
