DICK THIRD IN CHAMPIONSHIP

Speedworks Motorsport Team Principal Christian Dick’s strong second race performance in the Ginetta G50 Championship opener at Oulton Park on Easter Monday has left him well-placed in the championship.

Dick currently lies 33 points off double Oulton Park winner Nigel Moore in third overall, and would have been much closer but for a problem with the gear cut in the first race which dropped him to 10th.

“I’m really optimistic after Oulton,” says Dick. “Obviously we’d like to be a bit closer in the championship but that’s only because of what happened in the first race.

“We learned a lot from the first round. In testing there’s only so much you can get on top of but now we’ve had the first races we know where we are. Nigel has got a lot of pace – he drove superbly at Oulton – but we’re hopeful at Cadwell Park we’ll take a step forward.”

The next round of the Ginetta G50 Championship will take place at the Ginetta Festival at Cadwell Park on April 6.

HANCOCK MAKES WINNING START

Speedworks Motorsport instructor Ollie Hancock made a winning start to his Formula Renault BARC Championship season at Brands Hatch on Easter Monday.

Hancock, driving for Scorpio Motorsport, took the lead of the race from second on the grid, only for the race to be red flagged to clear up the cars of Pierre Renom and Lee Dwyer. At the restart, Hancock repeated the trick and had a lead of one second after two laps of the short Brands Hatch Indy Circuit.

After just five laps, Hancock was declared the winner whenthe race was stopped for a second time because Ellis Harkins ran into the gravel trap at Paddock Hill Bend.

“After the disappointment of the first race I was happy to get my first win in the bag," said Hancock. "The car has had great pace in testing so I was keen to be able to show this in the race. I was able to get in front early on - although Ash Davies certainly gave me a scare with his start – and then I just put my head down through to the chequered flag.”

Hancock's victory could have been his second of the day but for some bad luck in the twice red-flagged race. Hancock took the lead at the original start, only for him to lose it again when the race he was stopped. He then stalled on the grid for the restart and dropped to the back. When that race was also red flagged after four laps and the result declared, he had only had time to climb to 16th place.

Hancock now lies third in the championship standings heading to the second round of the championship at Rockingham on April 19/20.

DICK CHARGES TO SECOND

Christian Dick put in a stunning charge from sixth on the grid to claim runner-up spot in the the second Ginetta G50 race of the day at Oulton Park.

Dick made a spectacular getaway on the rolling start to jump to second place behind Nigel Moore, and despite briefly losing the position to Clive Richards in the middle of the race never looked like missing out on the podium.

"I'm made up with second place," said Dick. "I like rolling starts - just like my old short oval days - and even thought about having a go at the lead into the first corner! I had a really good battle with Clive Richards - he passed me on the inside into Lodge when I was struggling for grip but once he was ahead I realised he was having as much difficulty as I was! Then he spun a lap later and that was that.

"It's a very encouraging result. We've learned a lot about the car this weekend after a very limited pre-season test programme and that will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season."

Team-mate Richard Sykes finished 11th after spinning at Knickerbrook in the middle of the race.

JACKSON TAKES TOP SIX

Dave Jackson claimed sixth place in the second round of the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship at Oulton Park after a dramatic race.

Jackson passed Andy Smith at Druids on the final lap to break into the top six to make up for the disappointment of failing to finish the first race of the weekend.

"To be honest I was taking it very easy," said Jackson. "I was struggling for grip and found it difficult to have the confidence to push, but it's a good way to get the first points for the year."

Richard Sykes ran as high as third before crashing at Island Bend in the closing stages.

"I just went in a bit hot and understeered off," said Sykes. "It was getting very slippery there and I just overdid it."

The team was denied several more potentially strong finishes by a series of incidents. Paul Sheard, who finished second in the first race of the weekend, was unable to start the race after crashing at Cascades on the warm-up lap, while Ross Edwards could only finish 14th after demolishing the tyre stack at the first chicane on the first lap.

"I thought I'd braked early enough, but obviously I hadn't," said Edwards. "I just went in a bit too fast and hit the tyres."

Team-mate Edd Straw was denied a first top ten finish after going off avoiding an ailing car on the penultimate lap.

"I was just trying to have a really conservative race and take a top ten so I was taking it very easy," said Straw. "Unfortuantely the car ahead had a clutch problem and was so slow into the Shell Hairpin and I ended up going into the gravel avoiding him. I had loads of pace in reserve and think ninth was probably on."

Neil Merry, who was a contender for a strong finish despite starting from the back of the grid, was also denied the chance of a good result after spinning at the first corner.

DICK DENIED DEBUT PODIUM

Speedworks Motorsport Team Principal Christian Dick was denied a podium finish in the inaugural Ginetta G50 Championship race at Oulton Park after being hit by a fuel problem.

Dick leaped from sixth on the grid after struggling to find clear air in qualifying to third in damp conditions on the opening lap, with only eventual race winner Nigel Moore and old Ginetta G20 rival Ben Elliott ahead.

After the safety car was briefly deployed after former British Touring Car Car Championship race winner Paul O'Neill retired, Dick resumed in third place but soon started to slide down the order as the fuel problem manifested itself. In the end, he was fortunate to hold on to salvage tenth place after having to crawl around the last lap with chronic fuel surge.

"The car was easily good enough for third before the fuel problem," said Dick. "I just had no grip after a few laps and it was like driving on ice because the wets were getting badly worn - it was amazing fun though! Then the engine started cutting out before the halfway make - there was massive fuel surge. It just got worse as the race went on.

Team-mate Richard Sykes also endured a difficult race, finishing 14th despite having lost his bonnet and suffering radiator damage when he was forced off the road at the ultra-fast Island Bend.

"Someone in front of me at Island lifted and I just understeered off trying to avoid hitting him," said Sykes. "The front end of the car dug in and ripped the bonnet off. It's the worst place to go off and although I didn't hit anything there was a lot of damage. Somehow the radiator stayed on and the engine only started to overheat on the last lap!"

The Easter Monday crowd at Oulton Park in Cheshire will have the chance to see the historic first-ever round of the new Ginetta G50 Championship, in which Speedworks Motorsport will run two cars.

Speedworks team principal Christian Dick and Richard Sykes have both graduated to the new one-make series for the 300bhp Ginetta G50, and will start sixth and 13th on the grid for the inaugural race.

"It's a fantastic car and from the first race this category is going to become a crowd favourite," says Dick. "Anyone at a loose end on Easter Monday should head up to Oulton, stand at Cascades corner and prepare for a spectacular race!"

In addition to two races of the Ginetta G50 championship, Speedworks will run a total of six cars in the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship, which has its second race of the weekend on Monday.

SHEARD SECOND IN G20 OPENER

Local hero Paul Sheard claimed a battling second place in the opening round of the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship at Oulton Park.

The veteran climbed from ninth on the grid after struggling with braking problems in qualifying, and was only denied victory when he lost the lead after a big moment on oil which had been dropped by the car of Russell McCarthy. Despite the moment, Sheard still came close to victory, finishing just a second behind race winner Kieran Vernon.

Richard Sykes survived his own spin on the same oil at Cascades to kick off his season with a strong sixth, with Speedworks debutant Ross Edwards surviving a couple of offs of his own to take 12th.

Neil Merry charged from the back of the grid to climb to 11th before also going off on the oil, while Dave Jackson was on course for a strong finish before being taken out of the race by Paul Marsh.

Edd Straw also retired after climbing into the top ten, going off on the oil at Cascades and collecting the abandoned car of Paul Mancey.

SYKES STRONG IN G20 QUALIFYING

Richard Sykes was the best-placed of the Speedworks Motorsport drivers in qualifying for the opening round of the Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship at Oulton Park.

Sykes was just one second off the pole position time, set by Ginetta Junior graduate Paul Marsh, with team-mate Paul Sheard close behind in ninth.

"I'm still having problems with braking," said Sheard. "Hopefully we'll get it resolved in time for the first race because the pace is basically there."

Dave Jackson could manage only 12th after collecting a spinning car on the exit of the first chicane. The impact left him with a damaged chassis.

"He just spun in front of me, there was nothing I could do," said Jackson. "I'd dropped off the back of him to try and make some space but he just lost it."

Ross Edwards will start 13th after again struggling with understeer, which also afflicted 14th-placed Edd Straw.

DICK SIXTH IN G50 QUALIFYING

Christian Dick put his Avalon Vale-backed Ginetta G50 on the third row of the grid in qualifying for the inaugural round of the new-for-2008 one-make championship at Oulton Park.

Despite showing strong testing pace, Dick was unhappy with the balance of the car on new tyres and couldn't match the pole time set by Ginetta Junior graduate Nigel Moore. He was also fortunate to emerge with cosmetic damage and a flapping passenger-side door after being hit into a spin by David Dove at the flat-out Water Tower corner.

"It was a difficult session," said Dick. "Unfortunately the rear visibility in these cars isn't the best and David just didn't realise I was there. It was lucky the car didn't end up in the barriers.

"Considering this is the first round of the championship and we haven't had much running it's a solid start, but there's definitely more to come because I didn't get a clear lap. The race pace should be stronger as well."

Team-mate Richard Sykes will be one to watch in the races after qualifying 13th with a time slower than he has managed to produce in testing.

"I had a little bit of understeer and wasn't completely happy with the car," said Sykes. "But we know there's more pace in me so the races should go better."

Both races of the double-header will take place on Easter Monday.

SPEEDWORKS STRONG IN G20 PRACTICE

Speedworks Motorsport put in a strong showing in free practice for the opening round of the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship, with three drivers in the top six positions.

Richard Sykes set third fastest time, less than a second off the fastest time set by Julian Barratt, with Edd Straw and Dave Jackson rounding off a strong showing for Speedworks with fifth and sixth places.

"It was a good session, but there's still some more pace to come," said Sykes. "Fortunately I didn't have too much difficulty switching from the G50 to the G20 so hopefully it should be a good weekend."

Straw was delighted with his performance after struggling throughout the 2007 season.

"I picked up on something in the way I was driving the car which has just transformed it," said Straw. "Fifth is probably a little flattering at the moment but I'm confident there's easily another second to come in qualifying so with a bit of luck I can be thereabouts."

With Jackson sixth ahead of Spencer McCarthy, Paul Sheard made it four Speedworks cars in the top nine.

"It was a difficult session," said Sheard. "The grip level wasn't what I was looking for, but it's the first time I've properly driven on the new Michelin tyres so it should be better in qualifying."

Team newcomer Ross Edwards was 13th fastest after suffering from understeer.

"We still need to find about another three seconds, so we'll have to do some work on the setup! But we've made some good progress."

Neil Merry was unable to set a serious time after struggling with a misfire which the team expects to cure in time for this afternoon's qualifying session.

DICK POSITIVE AFTER G50 PRACTICE

Speedworks Motorsport team principal Christian Dick is confident of a strong performance in qualifying for the inaugural round of the Ginetta G50 Championship after setting third fastest time in the 15-minute free practice session.

With qualifying due to take place at 1145 this morning, Dick used the session to fine tune the setup of the 300bhp car ahead of the 15-minute session which will decide the grid for the race. His fastest time of 1m49.294s was just over a second shy of the best time set by Nigel Moore.

"We haven't had the chance to do to much running with the G50 so we're still learning all the time," said Dick. "Obviously it's good to have set a decent time, but the most important thing is that we were able to try a few things with the car and get ourselves in the best possible position for qualifying.

"The track temperature was pretty low and we were on old rubber, so there's plenty more to come later on today."

Team-mate Richard Sykes was ninth fastest after stepping up to the new series from the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship.

HUGHES MISSES OULTON OPENER

Speedworks Motorsport's Tony Hughes will miss this weekend's inaugural round of the new Ginetta G50 Championship after a problem with his race licence.

Hughes, who is stepping up to the new G50 after his first season in car racing in the Texaco Havoline G20 Championship last year, was unable to compete because he did not have the requisite National A licence to compete. However, Hughes is eligible for the licence, and will make his debut in the next round of the series at Cadwell Park next month.

"It's frustrating because it's just a paperwork problem," said Hughes. "I've got all the signatures I need to have a National A - it's just a shame that because of the Bank Holiday weekend we can't get the licence sorted in time.

"But it's a great car and I'll still be coming along to watch. I'm looking forward to Cadwell already!"

WET DAYS TESTING AT KNOCKHILL

Monday saw Richard Sykes testing his Ginetta G20 at Knockhill in extremely wet conditions! It was Richards first test at the circuit and the first time he's had the opportunity to shake down his newly upgraded car. Despite the weather, he had a good day and plenty was learnt and most importantly kept smiling!

Richard is to contest the Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship alongside the Ginetta G50 Cup as well.

Both rounds kick off at Oulton Park over Easter weekend 22nd March.

MERRY ON TRACK AT SILVERSTONE

Speedworks Motorsport's Neil Merry returned to the track for a productive day of testing on the Silverstone National circuit at the end of last week.

Merry, who is preparing for his second full season in the Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship with the team, completed a full day of testing in the car, which ran with a new and unpainted bonnet after an accident at Oulton Park earlierin the week (see picture).

"We had a good day and got in a decent number of laps," says Merry, who claimed three top ten finishes last year. "I was a bit frustrated with the accident at Oulton which meant I only got in a few laps so it was good to get in some serious running again.

"I haven't done a huge amount of testing recently and with the first round coming up soon it's important to get your eye back in."

The Texaco Havoline Ginetta G20 Championship, in which Speedworks will run a total of five cars, kicks off at Oulton Park over the Easter weekend.

SPEEDWORKS ON TRACK AT OULTON

Ross Edwards made his testing debut for Speedworks Motorsport on Tuesday, setting some impressive times around Oulton Park behind the wheel of his Ginetta G20.

Neil Merry also appeared at Oulton, although his time in his new G20 was restricted by an accident at Clay Hill early in the day. This gave him the opportunity to shake down his Sunbeam Tiger, which the team will run in Masters Racing Series Gentlemen Drivers events. Merry is set to race the car at the track during the prestigious Oulton Park Gold Cup in August.

Richard Sykes was also on track behind the wheel of his new Ginetta G50 Cup car. After an impressive first day in the car, Sykes is set for several further outings ahead of the first round of the new G50 Cup at the Cheshire circuit in two weeks.
