SPEEDWORKS INSTRUCTOR WINS TITLE

Ollie Hancock wrapped up the Formula Renault BARC championship title with two races to spare after a second place finish at his home circuit Thruxton at the weekend saw him build an unassailable points lead.

The 20-year-old Apotex Scorpio Motorsport driver, who has dominated the series in 2008, taking five wins and four other podiums from the ten races so far, secured the championship with second place at the Hampshire circuit to take his first major title in just his second season of modern racing.

Qualifying was held in damp but drying conditions and Ollie’s hopes of pole position were scuppered when the session was red flagged as he prepared for his flying laps.

Starting seventh on the grid, BRDC Rising Star Hancock made a good start and was third by the end of the first lap, taking second at the end of the second tour by outbraking Ahmad Al Harthy into the chicane. With race leader Johannes Seidlitz having already pulled out a significant advantage, and with Ollie needing just four points to seal the championship, the Hampshire youngster settled for second and the title.

“It’s a fantastic feeling and to have clinched it here at my home circuit, in front of all my family and friends makes it even more special,” said a delighted Hancock. “My only target this year was to win the title and today is a reward for the hard work the team and I have put in this season. I’d like to thank everybody at Apotex Scorpio Motorsport because they have been brilliant all year.”

DOUBLE PODIUM FOR DICK

Last weekend saw the Ginettas at Mallory Park for the final Ginetta festival of the year. Team principal Christian Dick scored two 3rd places in both races to further secure his position at 3rd in the Championship. "It was a good result, but we can't help being slightly disappionted after the first race as yellows round one half of the circuit prevented me from attacking Toby for 2nd" Said Dick, "In the second race we suffered with a diff problem, dropping us from 1st to 3rd."

Speedworks also looks to have secured the G50 Teams Championship for 2008.

EX-BTCC RACER JOINS SPEEDWORKS

Mark Proctor, who raced in the British Touring Car Championship in 2005/6, will make his Ginetta G50 debut with Speedworks Motorsport in this weekend's Ginetta Festival at Mallory Park.

The 39-year-old is racing at Mallory to evaluate the possibility of a full-time Ginetta G50 campaign with Speedworks, and will try out the 300bhp machine during Saturday's test sessions ahead of his race debut on Sunday.

"The car should really suit my driving style and I'm looking forward to it," said Proctor. "I'm not expecting to be fighting for a win but hopefully if I can get used to the car during testing I can show reasonably well.

"The plan is to do this weekend to get an idea of what it's all about before hopefully doing a full season next year. I'm looking forward to it."

Proctor has spent this season racing a Mini powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike engine in the Z-Cars saloons series after sitting out the 2007 season.

Prior to his two years as an independent in the BTCC, in which he raced first a Vauxhall Astra Coupe and later a Honda Civic Type-R, Proctor was a frontrunning in ASCAR, finishing regularly in the top six in the standings.

He also raced in Eurocars from 1996-2000, duing which time he regularly battled wheel-to-wheel with Speedworks Motorsport Team Principal Christian Dick.

"Having raced against him back in the Eurocar days I know how good a driver Mark is," said Dick. "He's fast and I'm confident that he will show well at Mallory Park this weekend. There's no doubt that a G50 in his hands will be a race winner at this level once he's had some decent time in the car."
