GT4 SUCCESS FOR SPEEDWORKS AT SILVERSTONELast weekend saw Speedworks Motorsport enter the GT4 G50 machine of Richard Sykes into the British GT meeting at Silverstone. Having not tested on the friday, the team turned up Saturday morning for free practice which saw them 2nd quickest in the GT4 class. Qualifying, only 7 tenths behind the class leaders. Sunday morning saw the car quickest in class before the build up to the big race.
Team Principal Christian Dick was to start the 2 hour race. A fantastic start saw him move into the lead until traffic forced him off the racing line and the WFR car was able to follow them through and take the lead. Christian continuously caught the leading G50 until there was less than a second between them, however, faster traffic coming through again forced the gap to increase. After 30 minutes, it was Team WFR leading with the Speedworks machine at the hands of Christian Dick hard charging behind. The 1 hour mark saw Christian in the lead with 20 minutes still left to go of his driver stint, 90 minutes in and the car was in the hands of Richard Sykes who nearly made it out of the pitlane before the WFR car came round, he battled on in second place with only 2 tenths seperating him and Jody Firth.
The final laps saw the Speedworks machine finish second in class, having completed 76 laps over 2hours, 2 minutes and 44 seconds. A fantastic achievement considering the team had done no testing, ran with one set of tyres and only its second outing in the British GT Championship!
Speedworks will be racing this Sunday 23rd August with the Sunbeam Tiger at Donington Park for the Masters Race Series.
