CHAIRMANS CUP SUCCESS AT SILVERSTONESilverstone race weekend saw Speedworks fielding 3 cars on the strongest G50 grid so far this year. With 20 drivers competing the racing was the closest we've seen.
Speedworks regulars Richard Sykes and Tony Hughes were joined by Ron Johnson on his G50 debut. Qualifying saw Richard Sykes lead the Chairmans Cup class to start in 10th place, with Ron Johnson qualifying an impressive 15th place and the ever improving Tony Hughes in 17th.
Race 1 began in rather a torrid manner with Julien Draper spinning on the opening lap and the unfortunate Ron Johnson collecting him, this put Ron out of the race. However, once the race settled down, Tony Hughes had a fantastic battle to finish in 11th place and Richard Sykes had a superb race finishing in 8th place and winning the Chairmans Cup.
Race 2 had a calmer start and saw all the Speedworks drivers finish. Once again Tony had a great battle to finish in 14th place with Ron Johnson finishing just behind in 15th. Richard Sykes had an even better race once again winning the Chairmans Cup in 7th place.
Race 2 saw very tricky damp conditions and a brave tyre choice by the team saw Ron and Richard running on slicks, Tony Hughes however, stayed on wets, and also suffered engine problems so retired from the race early. Ron had another great race finishing in 14th place, where Richard had a real battle on his hands, having dropped to 14th with only 5 laps to go, a last minute spurt saw him gain 5 spots and finish in 9th place, he also got fastest lap in the Chairmans Cup class.
The next round of the G50 Cup is at Rockingham Motor Speedway on 19th-20th September.
